Why don't the Cubs want to re-sign Seiya?
I mean, other than the obvious reason. That they're dumb.

Cubs fans are an odd lot. We contain multitudes. We know what things to get outraged about, but we also are too willing to just accept things as inevitable.
Take, for example the Cubs' shocking disinterest in re-signing Seiya Suzuki. Seiya was for most of last season the second-best player on the team behind Petecrow Armstrong and when Alex Bregman finally woke up in the second half, Seiya was the third best player on the team. A team, who the Brewers and then the Padres showed did not have enough good players.
Seiya is a free agent and as infuriating as the Cubs not being aggressive in trying to keep him is, how quickly the media and fans just embrace that as a thing that has to happen is just as dumb.
Here's a shocker. Not only does it not have to happen, it's actually a really horrible idea to let him leave.
At his annual stupefying postmortem on the season, Cubs President of Baseball Incompetence Jedward Hoyer (Jed is probably short for Jedward, right?) emphasized that the team needs to prioritize pitching. Well, yeah, the 2026 Cubs did not have enough pitching, something they had in common with just about every team they fielded before 2016 and after 2017. So get some pitching. Go nuts.
But you would think that a team that scored one run in the playoffs would also be interested in hitters.
The idea that they just can't afford Seiya is a campfire ghost story.
