Second place isn't too bad
The Cubs pursuit of the Brewers has derailed, but so what?
Just thirteen days ago I wondered if the Cubs could catch the Brewers. They had a slightly easier schedule the rest of the way and more home games than Milwaukee, and they have seven head to head games coming up with four at Wrigley.
Just two days later the Cubs cut the Brewers lead to three games, the closest they had been since May 24.
And now the lead is six and we have our answer.
No.
No, they cannot.
The Cubs have gone 6-6 since that day, so they're not exactly in free fall. But some of the losses have been more irritating than most. The back to back walk off losses in Seattke, the three homer game by Joshua Baez (who, by the way has gone 2-for-34 with 14 strikeouts since his third homer) and managing just two hits in six scoreless innings against Jose Urquidy and his 8.10 ERA in the finale of the Sox series.
Annoying, but nothing to get all that upset by. Right?
Right?
What is he so mad about? The Cubs have the third best record in the National League. They couldn't miss the playoffs from this point if they tried (actually, if they tried they could, so they should not try to do that.)
