Can the Cubs still catch the Brewers?

Going into last night, the Cubs and Brewers had both posted 40-24 records over their last 64 games. It's been frustrating for the Cubs, as both teams have the best record in baseball over that time period and as a result the Cubs didn't gain any ground in the race for the NL Central title.

In a Wild Card filled playoffs, it doesn't seem like it would matter all that much if you win the division as long as you get into the playoffs, but the winner of the Central this year is very likely to have the best record in the National League (and all of baseball) and all of the accoutrements that come with it. Home field throughout the playoffs, and no need to sully yourselves with a best two of three Wild Card round series.

The argument about the gritty little Brewers winning with a low payroll is about as fresh as whatever breakfast foods Pat Murphy is cramming into the pocket of his hoodie. They have a billionaire owner, and Mark Attanasio just decides not to spend more. It's also fairly nuts that the Brewers sat out the Tarik Skubal bidding at the trade deadline, given how wonderful we are constantly told their farm system is.

They deserve to get caught. But even if the Brewers cool off, can the Cubs continue their torrid pace?
