It can’t be disputed that Jed Hoyer’s “intelligent spending” has brought in a number of new players. The good news is that the Cubs’ pitching and defense are both improved. The bad news is that the offense still stinks on ice, and while there are still a number of free agents out there, most of them are bad.

That’s not to say there aren’t some intriguing options. For instance, the Cubs could reunite the corner infielders from the Royals back-to-back World Series teams in 2014 and 2015. Both Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas have been DFA’d and can be had for the low low price of the veteran league minimum. In 2015—the year they won the World Series—they combined for 40 homers and 175 RBI. Man, that would be nice for the 2023 Cubs.

However…last year they combined for 15 homers and 65 RBI. Is that good? That doesn’t seem good. The Red Sox and Reds are going to pay the two a combined $61 million to not play for them.
