The Cubs 3-3 road trip to the Mets and Blue Jays was disappointing, considering the Mets have given up (and demonstrated that by losing the first three games of their series with the Barves 34-3—not a typo—34-3), and the Cubs won the first two games in Toronto before getting smoked in the finale.

That loss, and the Yankees comical collapse on Sunday in Miami, where they led 7-2 in the eighth and 7-3 in the ninth before losing 8-7, has the Cubs for the moment on the outside of the three wild card spots and looking in.

It’s still a little early to be scoreboard watching, but it didn’t stop Cubs’ TV analyst Jim Deshaies from making the bold prediction that when the Brewers come to Wrigley Field on August 28 to start a three game series, that the Cubs will be ahead of them in the standings.

That is bold, considering the Brewers win over the White Sox and the Cubs loss on Sunday gave Milwaukee a 3.5 game lead.

But you can see why JD would predict it. The Cubs play 12 games between now and the start of that series and they play all bad teams. Two at home with the Sox starting tomorrow night, then three at home against Kansas City. Then a seven game road trip with three in Detroit and four in Pissburgh.

The Brewers, meanwhile, play 11 games between now and then and they get three first place teams. They start a six game road trip tomorrow with three against the Dodgers and three with the Rangers. Then they come home for two with the Twins before a three game set against San Diego.

So, given the schedule disparity, how likely is JD to be right?
