The Cubs are shaking up the roster

Will it be a big change or just a tiny little one? Let's hope it involves a tiny little person, at least.

The Cubs have been dealing with injuries to key players all season. It started four and half innings into the opener when Justin Steele rolled around in the grass in Arlington, Texas and has continued. And yet, until this past week it hadn’t threatened to derail them. We just waited for them to get everybody back while they kept their heads above water in the meantime.

But last week they lost series to both the Barves (two of three in Atlanta) and Pissburgh (three of four at home—ouch.)

It’s really difficult to win games when your middle infield combines to go 8-for-42 (.190) with all eight hits being singles, and half of the hits came in one game, the May 15, 7-1 win over the Barves.

The Cubs weren’t playing Miles Mastrobuoni and Nick Madrigal at short and second because they wanted to, but because they had no better option.

Or did they?

After Sunday’s loss, ESPN’s Jorge Castillo announced that Luis Vazquez was being promoted to the Cubs and would be on the roster for Tuesday’s game against the Barves. (The Cubs are off tonight.)

I’m not sure if we can believe it though, Castillo said his source is Luis’ mother. Taylor McGregor would have held out for dad.

I mean, it’s not like Jorge is a relation.

Oh, wait. He is. He’s Luis’ cousin. OK, I guess it’s legit.

The intriguing part of this is who loses their roster spot. We were told before yesterday’s game that Nico was ready to play on Tuesday and Dansby would likely come off the IL to play that day, too. And the little guy from Marquee even took a picture of them playing catch before the game. I mean, don’t you have to be ready to play if you can handle the physical exertion of catch?

Nico has been day to day for a full week. He hasn’t played since May 12. So, with the day off tonight he’ll go eight days without playing. Had he just gone on the injured list he’d have been eligible to come off on Thursday. Nice work, as usual, Cubs medical staff.

So if it turns out that neither or just one of Dansby or Nico are actually ready go maybe the idea is just to upgrade over Mastrobuoni for the duration?
