The trade deadline officially arrives tonight at 5 p.m., but for one oddly shaped Cub, it might as well have been 6 p.m. last night.

Jameson Taillon has been a good pitcher for the Cubs this season and as Boog Sciambi said, “If you go back to September 8 last year…” you know what, Boog? I don’t care. The Cubs have been ass since September 8 last year, I don’t need you to recite Taillon’s meaningless stats to me.

Anyway, even with two more years left on his deal (or, maybe because of them), there have been rumors that the Cubs are trying to trade big Jimmy, and last week there were rumors that the Red Sox and Yankees were fighting over him.

Granted, it could have been this kind of fighting. “You take him!” “No, YOU take him!”

Regardless, it felt like if the Cubs felt they were close to a deal for Taillon that they wouldn’t risk letting him take his start last night, where he might get hurt or give up six runs in four innings, or something. Crazy, right?

And, apparently, the Cubs were prepared for any eventuality.

I like to picture three Cubs minor league pitchers crammed into the back of a cab that was just circling Great American Ballpark for an hour before first pitch just in case.

There also was the looming threat of a thunderstorm that might delay the start of the game and give Cubs President of “Nah, we don’t need to see medical records, we’ll take your word for it” Jed Hoyer even more time to work his magic. Whatever that is.

But the clouds parted and Taillon started and then he mostly sharted all over the mound as the Reds routed the Cubs.
