Jed's gotta trade for somebody
A look at who he should get, who he'll try to get, and who he'll settle for
Every year that the Cubs are contending at the end of July the fanbase gets all fired up about all of the things they could do to dramatically improve their chances of winning something...anything, really. And most years, they disappoint the shit out of us.
Will this year be any different?
We'd all like to think so. But we know better.
We're going to look at who they should be trying to trade for, who they probably are actually going to try to trade for, and in the end who they will probably end up with.
But first, let's take a look back at the deadline deals Jed has actually done in the years after his big 2021 selloff of the World Series team, starting with the first year they were in playoff contention in July back in 2023.
2023 Trade Deadline
Traded SS Kevin Made and LHP DJ Herz to the Nationals for 3B Jeimer Candelario
2024 Trade Deadline
Traded 3B Christopher Morel, RHP Hunter Bigge and RHP Ty Johnson to the Rays for 3B Isaac Paredes
Traded RHP Mark Leiter Jr. to the Yankees for SS Benjamin Cowles and RHP Jack Neely
2025 Trade Deadline
Traded SS Ronny Cruz and LF Christian Franklin to the Nationals for RHP Mike Soroka
Traded RHP Sam Armstrong and RHP Ryan Gallagher to the Twins for IF/OF Willi Castro
Traded SS Wilfri De La Cruz to the Orioles for RHP Andrew Kittredge
Traded RF Ivan Brethowr to Pissburgh for LHP Taylor Rogers
That's it. Three years of contention, two near misses and one playoff appearance and in total trades for six big league players none of whom were still around the next season.
