And not in the good way

This isn’t going to be yet another, “Hey Jed, you’d better sign Cody Bellinger” column. Though he should. Instead we’re doing to do something terrifying.

We’re going to take a look at what the Cubs lineup would look like if they don’t add anybody else. Not Cody, not Matt Chapman, not even talking Eric Hosmer out of retirement.

Nobody.

If baseball told every team that they were freezing their rosters right now, as they stand on the morning of Valentine’s Day, and that’s the roster they’d have to play the season with, what place would the Cubs finish in?

I’d say fourth.

Every team in the NL Central is flawed. I think every team could crap all over themselves and finish last (not at the same time), but if you made me line the teams up right now I’d rank them, Cardinals, Reds, Brewers, Cubs, Pirates. I also think that the best team in the NL Central right now would be the eighth best team (at best) in the league.

Not the Major Leagues.

The National League.

Anyway, let’s look at the projected starting position players and DH. We’ll get to the pitching staff some other day.
