Cubs president of “I have an ample player personnel budget that I am not allowed to spend all of” Jed Hoyer came on the podcast to talk about…

Wait, “came on the podcast?” He was on the Pointless Exercise podcast?

Uh, no. I guess more accurately, “Jed Hoyer was on a podcast.” He was on one with baseball insiders Joel Sherman of the New York Post and MLB Network, and our old friend #hugetits Jon Heyman of, I guess, WFAN maybe, and MLB Network.

Anyway, Jed broke out some of his Cubs Convention “A” material, including still trying to make “we’re on the front edge of something” happen. It’s never going to happen. But he also talked about some other stuff.

Is there enough here to milk two newsletters out of?

You bet your ass there is.

So here’s part one.

Joel asks Jed why the Cubs 2016 team didn’t turn into a dynasty and even short of a dynasty how did the young core not even last five more full seasons?

Jed: That’s a great question, and honestly a question that I’ve probably spent thousands and thousands of hours thinking about.

Thousands and thousands? Jed, that’s a lot of thousands. At least two. Could be more.

When we won, Fangraphs had a thing about most young talent under control and we had almost double any other team. We had so much young talent on the books and we’d just won a World Series. You just felt like we’re going to be back here every year.

Part of the problem is that Fangraphs put Albert Almora and Carl Edwards Jr. on that young talent list. And it turned out they were just young.
