In a wild finish to regulation in yesterday’s Bears loss to the Vikings, the Bears showed the kind of fight and spunk that you want to see. They also showed the same kind of dumb that is going to lead to the inevitable firing of the entire coaching staff.
Down 11 points with :22 to go the Bears got a Caleb Williams touchdown pass to Keenan Allen, a Caleb Williams two point conversion pass to DJ Moore, a successful Cairo Santos onside kick recovered by Tarvarious Moore, a 27 yard pass from Caleb Williams to DJ Moore to put the Bears in field goal range and then Cairo made a game-tying field goal to send the game to overtime.
All that shit really happened. And the Bears still lost.
And they lost, because despite all of that, and despite another great performance from their quarterback (Caleb was 32-47 for 340 yards and two touchdowns), the Bears just did so many dumb things.
DeAndre Carter, who has done a nice job as the Bears kick and punt returner finally went full-Velus and let a punt bounce off of him at the Bears 15 yard line. It was a terrible, avoidable mistake. He let the punt go and hit the ground, which was fine, but instead of getting the fuck out of the area he just kind of hung around and it took a weird bounce, hit him in the leg and was immediately recovered by something named Bo Richter.
The Bears were about to take over down seven and instead they were down 14 before they could get the ball back.
A week after their wild comeback against Green Bay was nullified by a blocked field goal at the buzzer, the first field goal they lined up for yesterday was also blocked.
In both cases you can pin some of the blame on the kicker. Cairo has got to do a better job of getting his kicks up faster, but also in both cases the middle of the Bears line got trucked by defenders and gave up way too much of a surge.
But it’s not like those three missed points hurt the Bears. Oh, wait, they did. Never mind.
